Top 10 in-demand Tech Skills: Simply vs Upwork

Simply Reports: Companies seek different tech skills from perm and freelancer resources.

Simply’s research shows companies are using permanent hiring and freelancer use to close different skill gaps. We analysed the difference between the most in demand technology skills in permanent hiring and projects posted to Upwork, a freelancer marketplace.

While core software development skills are a common theme the data shows the nature of work and projects differ between the two routes. When analysing the top 10 skills sought through permanent hiring, development practices such as CI/CD and DevOps are more popular.

In a tight labour market for technical skills, companies are using the independent freelancer market to bring in hard to find skills and get work delivered right now. This suggests a model of using freelancer resource to augment the workforce with targeted skills such as UX/UI design and web design.

Leading companies are unlocking the power of skills to make informed build versus buy decisions. They can intentionally get beyond high-level roles to target the specific skills they need in the short-term. This further enables them to protect investment for skills they need on an ongoing basis, such as they turn to permanent hiring for, or build through internal mobility programmes.

Simply can help you close skill gaps across your technology and product functions. Our AI and analytics powered solution combines internal and external labour market data together, giving you a full picture of the skills you have and the skills you need, and the best talent pools to access to close the gap.
